You may have noticed that the labour market seems to be getting very
tight. These days, companies are streamlining, downsizing, and closing.
And, our market is getting flooded with six-figure job seekers. Some
professionals who are accustomed to making a salary over $100,000, are
finding it more difficult than ever to compete. But, others are
succeeding. Do you wonder what they are they doing differently? How are
they finding jobs when all we hear about is economic “doom and gloom”?
Six-figure job seekers who seem to thrive in challenging times have
some things in common. If we can decipher and use their strategies, we
can turn a difficult situation into an extraordinary opportunity.
Today, I’m going to offer you some things that you can do to thrive in
this tough economy.
Ever notice that some people are always positive. Their enthusiasm is
infectious. These type of people inspire us and make us feel good even
if we are having a bad day. If you are acting negatively, you can be
assured that people notice. By changing your attitude from pessimistic
to optimistic, you will see that people want to be around you –
especially during tough times. Rather than focusing on the current
economic situation or your own job loss, focus on your exciting, yet
uncharted destination ahead.
I’ve noticed that successful people tend to have a broad and varied
background. They seem to “fit in” no matter what challenges come along.
Tap emerging markets by researching thriving industries. Delve into
your values and strengths, join new associations and groups, and
investigate how you can add value to the new economy. If you stretch
yourself and broaden your area of expertise, you’ll naturally fit into
more opportunities.
Successful professionals tend to know their career brand. Here’s a
question I would like to ask. Why should I hire you instead of all the
other successful people in a market that is saturated with qualified
six-figure professionals? Why should I pick you? The answer to this
question is your personal career brand. Develop your career brand by
creating a strong value proposition (your sales pitch). And, create a
brand identity that sells you well. You will effectively put yourself
in a class of your own.
All the successful professionals that I know are “in the know.” They
have strong relationships with people who are leaders in their
industry. If you want to drive your career forward, you must also build
your database to include influential people. Target leaders, experts,
and decision makers in your industry and you’ll find that they can help
you during tough times.
These days, most experts I know have a strong online business presence.
By joining and using social networks such as LinkedIn, you’ll establish
yourself as an expert too. If you are a strong communicator and you
write well, consider starting your own business blog to share
information in your area of expertise.
It’s never too late to turn things around. Start to use some of these
strategies immediately. You’ll not only survive, but you’ll thrive in a
market that is saturated with highly qualified, six-figure
professionals like yourself.
